At a Fortune 500 organization, this role offers hands-on ownership of a complex, multi-state payroll tax environment and collaboration with Payroll, IT, employees, and an external tax provider. This hybrid contract opportunity offers valuable exposure to SAP Payroll, ADP SmartCompliance, multi-state taxation, compliance, and year-end payroll activities.
The Senior Payroll Tax Analyst will support and lead key components of the U.S. payroll tax function, processing weekly payroll taxes in SAP and coordinating closely with ADP on deposits, filings, notices, and compliance. This role will reconcile payroll tax data, manage state and local tax accounts, support system testing, and ensure accurate taxation of employee compensation, including stock and relocation transactions.
Responsibilities
- Process federal, state, and local payroll taxes within SAP weekly.
- Coordinate with ADP to monitor payroll tax deposits, payments, returns, and required filings.
- Research payroll tax issues and partner with ADP to resolve tax notices and discrepancies.
- Reconcile quarterly and annual payroll tax filings between SAP and ADP, including Form W-2 data.
- Manage the setup and closure of state and local payroll tax accounts.
- Monitor state unemployment rates and coordinate required SAP system updates with IT.
- Validate employee tax withholdings associated with stock and relocation transactions.
- Lead testing of payroll tax rates, calculations, and system changes within SAP.
- Respond to employee questions involving payroll tax withholding and related issues.
- Maintain clear documentation of payroll tax processes, procedures, and controls.
- Monitor changes to federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
- Execute payroll tax SOX controls and support compliance requirements.
- Support payroll projects, year-end activities, and other payroll processing responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Accounting or Finance strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of current payroll experience in an ERP-based environment preferred.
- Experience with SAP Payroll strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting multi-state payroll tax, including federal, state, and local taxation.
- Experience with ADP SmartCompliance or other ADP payroll tax solutions preferred.
- Knowledge of payroll tax deposits, filings, notices, reconciliations, and year-end reporting.
- Experience reconciling payroll tax data and Form W-2 information across payroll systems.
- Experience with payroll tax testing, system changes, and tax account maintenance preferred.
- Working knowledge of SOX controls and payroll compliance requirements.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills; proficiency with Word and Outlook.
- Availability for occasional overtime during payroll processing, year-end, and special projects.
