This Houston-based hybrid contract role offers direct exposure to high-volume global energy trading across natural gas, LNG, LPG, and other energy products, with an organization focused on delivering more reliable, accessible, and sustainable energy.
The Back Office Analyst will support a fast-paced energy trading environment responsible for approximately 250,000 trade confirmations and 35,000 invoices and payments annually. Working across trade validation, confirmations, settlements, invoicing, regulatory reporting, and counterparty support, this role will help protect the integrity of the trading book and reduce financial and operational risk. The Back Office Analyst will also leverage Excel, automation, and data analytics tools to improve processes and reporting while partnering with Risk, Operations, Treasury, Accounting, IT, and external counterparties.
Responsibilities
- Manage assigned trading counterparty portfolios and validate deal sheets, trading records, exchange positions, and limits.
- Confirm daily trades with counterparties and brokers and reconcile confirmations against internal trading records.
- Process approximately time-sensitive trade confirmations, invoices, settlements, and payment instructions in accordance with contractual requirements.
- Reconcile invoice and settlement discrepancies in partnership with Operations, Middle Office, and external counterparties.
- Provide settlement information, payment instructions, and cash forecasts to Treasury.
- Support Accounting with debt reporting, accruals, and settlement statement analysis.
- Complete OTC trade reporting within required Dodd-Frank reporting timelines.
- Lead onboarding activities for new counterparties and respond to trade-related inquiries.
- Support trading activities across natural gas, LNG, LPG, ethane, shale gas, and related energy products.
- Develop reporting and automation solutions and contribute to system enhancements, testing, process improvements, and operational risk mitigation.
- Support audits, regulatory compliance activities, management reporting, and new product or market implementations.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, Energy, or a business-related discipline.
- 2–3 years of experience in gas, LNG, energy markets, or related energy trading operations with a strong data analysis component.
- Knowledge of energy commodity markets highly preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency, including VBA.
- Experience with Python for data analysis and process optimization.
- Experience developing dashboards and reporting with Power BI.
- Experience with Alteryx for data preparation and automation.
- Familiarity with Power Automate and workflow automation.
- Experience with trade confirmations, settlements, invoicing, reconciliations, or trading book validation preferred.
- Knowledge of Dodd-Frank, Sarbanes-Oxley, audit requirements, or related regulatory frameworks preferred.
