The Renewables Environmental Permitting Engineer will lead construction-phase environmental compliance across multiple renewable energy projects, ensuring regulatory requirements, permit commitments, and environmental standards are effectively implemented in the field. This role will oversee environmental inspections and consultants, evaluate project risks, guide construction teams through corrective actions, and manage compliance across complex permitting frameworks. The position provides significant ownership and visibility across large-scale renewable energy construction projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead construction-site environmental compliance audits and site-specific impact assessments across multiple renewable energy projects.
- Manage environmental consultants, including RFPs, scopes, schedules, site access, and regulatory compliance inspections.
- Oversee compliance with SPCC, SWPPP, MBTA, Section 404, state-level NEPA, isolated waters, conditional use, and protected species requirements.
- Serve as a central resource for environmental and permitting questions from construction teams, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
- Communicate environmental audit findings and impact assessments to construction teams and guide corrective action implementation.
- Track environmental compliance, corrective actions, project progress, and construction KPIs across multiple projects.
- Review project layouts, construction designs, EPC bid packages, and project constraints for environmental risks and permitting requirements.
- Maintain records of inspections, spills, cleanups, permit violations, non-compliance, and site restoration activities.
- Monitor restoration activities against regulatory, contractual, and organizational standards.
- Provide environmental and permitting updates during internal and external project meetings.
- Travel to construction sites approximately once every three months for inspections and project coordination.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ years of relevant environmental compliance, permitting, or construction environmental management experience.
- Experience managing environmental requirements for renewable energy construction or large infrastructure projects.
- Experience leading environmental inspections and developing or implementing environmental management plans.
- Working knowledge of the Clean Water Act, SWPPP, NPDES, SPCC, protected species regulations, and related federal, state, and local requirements.
- Experience assessing environmental impacts and risks and developing appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Experience managing environmental consultants and contractor compliance during construction.
- Experience managing multiple projects concurrently across budget, schedule, and scope.
- Knowledge of stormwater permitting, protected species management, biodiversity, sustainability, or site restoration is preferred.
- Ability to travel periodically to active construction sites.
