NONFARM PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT

Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Statistical Area employment grew for the third consecutive month gaining 2,700 jobs in April ’10. Leisure and Hospitality led growth in all sectors, adding 1,900 jobs over the month. Government and Education and Health Services each added 1,600 jobs. The one-month gains were offset by losses in: Trade, Transportation and Utilities (2,300), Construction (700), Information (500), and Manufacturing (400).

For the 12 months ending April ’10, the Houston MSA lost 40,900 jobs, a considerable improvement over last month’s report, when the region’s 12-month job loss was 61,700.

Houston’s unemployment rate stood at 8.4 percent in April, a slight improvement from last month’s rate (8.5 percent). Texas’ unemployment rate stood at 8.1 percent, and the United States’ at 9.5 percent. (All rates are not seasonally adjusted.)
